Verify at startup, every 30–60 minutes during production, after product changeover, and at end of production. Pass all three test pieces (Fe, non-Fe, SS) every time. If any fail, quarantine product since last successful test.
A routine verification log for food production quality staff documenting metal detector performance checks using certified test pieces. Records the test piece type and size, pass/fail result for each metal type (ferrous, non-ferrous, stainless steel), detector sensitivity settings, reject mechanism function, and corrective actions taken when a verification fails — the documented proof that the metal detector is performing to specification at every check interval.
Metal detectors are the critical control point for physical contamination in most food production HACCP plans. A detector that passes verification at the start of the shift but drifts out of sensitivity during production will miss contaminants. Regular verification throughout the shift — typically every 30–60 minutes — catches drift before compromised product leaves the facility.
