Inspect monthly. Pay special attention to flammable storage quantities — bench-top limits exist for a reason. Verify fume hoods are not used as storage. Check every exit route.
A monthly fire safety inspection checklist for laboratory managers and safety officers assessing the unique fire risks in research and analytical laboratories. Covers flammable and combustible liquid storage, fume hood condition, ignition source controls, fire extinguisher and suppression systems, emergency shower and eyewash stations, chemical spill kits, and exit route clearance.
Laboratories contain concentrated fire hazards — flammable solvents, oxidising agents, ignition sources (Bunsen burners, hot plates, electrical equipment), and pressurised gas cylinders. A fire in a laboratory can also release toxic fumes, compounding the danger. This checklist addresses the lab-specific fire risks that standard building inspections miss.
