An internal audit checklist for designated persons ashore and ship safety officers assessing compliance with the International Safety Management (ISM) Code. Covers all 13 functional elements — company safety policy, responsibilities and authority, designated persons, master's responsibility, resources and personnel, shipboard operations, emergency preparedness, reporting and analysis, maintenance, documentation, company verification, and certification.

The ISM Code requires every shipping company to establish a Safety Management System and conduct internal audits at least annually. This checklist follows the Code's structure to systematically verify that the SMS is implemented, maintained, and effective — both ashore and aboard the vessel.
