Train over 3–5 shifts. The host must learn the floor plan, the reservation system, and every server's section. Role-play difficult situations — long waits, demanding guests, walk-ins during a full house.
A training checklist for restaurant managers onboarding new host/hostess staff. Covers the guest greeting and first impression, reservation system operation, seating strategy and server rotation, wait time management and communication, phone etiquette and reservation taking, VIP and special occasion recognition, and the situational judgement skills that make a great host.
The host is the first and last person every guest interacts with — their greeting sets the tone for the entire meal and their farewell creates the lasting impression. A poorly trained host who seats unevenly, loses track of the wait list, or fails to acknowledge waiting guests undermines the entire service team's effort.
